ABOUT >>

Miami Gymnastics Club is a university club made up of student athletes and people interested in the sport of gymnastics. Participating students have the opportunity to learn and/or enhance their gymnastics skills. The club encourages students of all skill levels to join the team; from people that have never attempted a cartwheel to people that have been competing their entire lives. The Miami Gymnastics team is a self-run and self-motivated group of people. We run our own practices, organize our own competitions, and manage team bonding activities.

MEMBERSHIP

The Miami Gymnastics team is open to whomever wants to join the team. There is no prior experience required to join. The team accepts Miami students and faculty of all skill levels: from beginner to elite. There are many gymnasts at practices that are more than willing to help coach and spot on any skill you wish to learn. Membership includes semester dues of around $125 per semester (scholarships are available). All members of the team are encouraged to come to practice, attend fundraising, compete at meets, and participate at social events.

LOCATION

The Miami Gymnastics club is located on Miami University’s campus in Sawyer Hall. Sawyer Hall can be found in the East part of campus ("Western Campus"), near Peabody Hall. The gym facilities include all women’s and men’s events: Floor, Beam, Uneven Bars, Vault, Pommel Horse, Rings, Parallel Bars, and High Bar. The gym also includes a number of mats and other training equipment assisting in the learning of new skills and ensure the safety of the athletes. The team is very lucky as a club sport to have a gymnasium of their own, and encourage anyone to stop by and check it out for themselves!

COMPETITIONS

The Miami Gymnastics team competes in multiple competitions throughout the year. All members of the team may attend all competitions free of charge. Expenses at the competition are covered in membership dues (except food). The team travels to competitions all around the region, including Virginia, Ohio, Illinois, Michigan and Pennsylvania. The team concludes each season with a national competition, where every club in the country joins together to compete. The location of Nationals changes every year, but it is always the best and most memorable competition of the year.

For competitions, the team is usually divided into a competitive team and a recreational team. In general, the competitive team is composed of experienced athletes or those who are confident in their skills, while the recreational team is more for relaxed athletes and beginners. The reason for the split is to accommodate the numbers of participants, and allow for beginners to feel less pressure in competition.

TEAM BONDING

The gymnastics team participates in many team bonding activities throughout the year. The gymnastics club not only shares in the interest of the sport, but also embraces team comradery by building long-lasting relationships with teammates. There are a series of annual activities that establish this team atmosphere. At the beginning of the year, the new members of the team are introduced with a Tie-Dye/Pizza Party. The team continues to get to know each other during the Progressive dinner, an event where the team moves from venue to venue having a different course of dinner at each place. Before each competition, the team prepares with a Pasta Dinner where everyone is welcome to join and have some fun and good food. Occasionally, the team participates in fundraising activities and invents fun and creative ways to raise funds to support our club. Throughout the year, the main source of team bonding comes during practices and competitions, where the team spends hours together participating in the sport we all love.
